Low Ceiling Design Tricks

Updated: Feb 26, 2021

A low ceiling can be a problem which you might easily overstuff and make your space feel cramped. In fact, working with a shorter structure can actually amp up your creativity. Low ceiling rooms can be fun to style, if you don’t allow the height to restrict your design. If your rooms are vertically challenged, don’t worry - there are ways to make them feel higher, without actually raising the roof!

Low Furniture

Go for low furniture and ‘weight’ the bottom of the room. Clustering objects in the lower portion of a room can actually make the room feel much more spacious. When the horizontal lines in a room are lower, such as from furniture, it draws the eye to the expanse of wall above, tricks the eye into thinking the rest of the room is taller. You’ll add a sense of height by increasing the area between the furniture and the ceiling,

Sofas, armchairs and coffee tables that close to the floor, as well as ottomans, cushions, bean bags or floor seating will work perfectly here. It provides a sumptuous space to sit while freeing up the area above it. You can also choose small furniture items and turn rooms with low ceilings into airy interiors which feel spacious and comfortable.

Tall / Full Height Furniture

It might sound counterintuitive, but full-height storage furniture, tall and narrow shelving units and open shelves on a wall all the way up are also perfect solution for small rooms with low ceilings. It directs the focus vertically rather than horizontally, so it distracts from the size of the room. Try contrasting your tall furniture with smaller furniture, you’ll have pieces that are proportional to the largest piece in the room, creating perfect visual balance.

Doors up to Ceiling

Take doors up to the ceiling. Make the most of all available vertical space by installing ceiling-height doors. Just like full height furniture, ceiling-height doors keep the eyes moving upward and enhance the illusion of height.

Dark Shade

It’s tempting to go for a bright white paint to create a feeling of space in your squat room. However, dark shade can also work wonders for elongating a space if used correctly. A dark shaded accent wall can change the perspective of size and space in a room with low ceilings. Working dark shade into your ceiling and walls can create somewhat of a “void” and tricks the eye into thinking there’s more space than there really is.

In small rooms, it is better to avoid large areas of uniformly dark colours, but simply choosing a shade a few tones darker will give the desired effect. You can try to mix in small-scale furniture to balance the dark accent wall.

Vertical Patterns

Go for vertical wall details, nothing draws the eye up like a vertical pattern. Adding elements of verticality will force the eye to go up and raise low ceilings visually. To add a little height to your walls, try a bold, striped wallpaper or paintings. For an even more personalized touch, consider painting wide stripes in the colour of your choice.

Other vertical graphic elements have a similar effect - paintings or other decorative elements in vertically elongated frames, or narrow panelling painted in the same colour as the wall above. If you’d like to have some texture, installing vertical wood panelling also create the same effect.

Lengthen the curtains

Long curtains and drapes can make the ceiling appear higher; their long lines make the ceiling appear higher. All you have to do is mount your curtains higher than your actual window frame. Invest in vertical ones, and again, choose ones that stretch all the way from the ceiling to the floor. Just like tall furniture, long curtain is another smart way to bring vertical lines into small rooms and balance the dimensions.

A lot of people think the trim is there as like a guide to tell you where to put a rod, but just go right on past it and straight up. When the curtains hang from the top of the wall to the bottom, their long lines help elongate the walls and draw the focus upwards in the room. The key is to find the right length curtain that goes full floor to ceiling.

Level up your décor

If you’re planning on hanging artwork, hang them higher than you normally would. They will guide the gaze up and thus create the impression of height. You can also mount artwork on a wall at different levels, is a great way to create a perception of height.
