Renovation Tips #2: What You Should Spend On Vs What To Save

Many people feel that renovation is a costly affair. Well, it depends on what you spend, it doesn’t have to be pricey if you are clear about what you want, or ask yourself: do you really need it? Sure, call it a long-term investment (after all, you’re probably going to stay in it for years to come) - but some things aren’t necessarily important or worth the extra splurge. To save yourself the potential regret (and to help you save up), here are some tips that we always recommend for our clients.

1. Mixed Tiles: SAVE

Man, how can you not getting them, they are just so gorgeous and they are everywhere on our Instagram feed! That being said, expensive tiles really add up and to be honest, don’t make much difference to your functional use of a space. Unless you’re an eclectic soul who has always been in love with this sort of mismatched thing, they can be worth it, but if you are on a budget just choose a simple tile and lay it in an interesting way, or choose a smaller feature wall to use the special tiles and do simple tiles for the rest. And remember to also think about the cost of labour involved, the more simple your tile and lay out the less it will cost to lay.

2. Storage: SPEND

Ever lived in a home with zero storage? It’s the pits. So if you want to spend money on something useful that will make your whole life better, spend it on integrated storage. Besides cabinets and wardrobe, platform beds are recommended as they might be heaven-sent solutions for hoarders and they give off that zen-like, minimalist look.

3. Kitchen Cabinets: SPEND

Skimping on kitchen cabinetry can result in everyday wear and tear taking a toll much more quickly than you anticipated. Regardless of style and finish, cabinets should be made of hard-wearing material that will hold up to repeated use.

While most of your renovation decisions will come down to personal preference and budget, knowing where to spend and where to save during your home renovation can help you stick to a budget and come out on the other side without regrets.

4. Bathtubs: SAVE

A long, leisurely soak in a luxurious tub sounds like the ultimate indulgence – because it is.

Man, most of us probably wouldn’t make full use of a bathtub on a daily basis; instead we’d grab a shower head to get the job over and done with!

Not only are bathtubs a hassle to install, they can consume more water – and are chore to clean. So, leave that claw foot tub for your next staycation instead, maybe?

5. Interior Designer: SPEND

If you already have some renovation plans drawn up or a good idea of what you want to do with each space, then a contractor would be your best bet. But a contractor is not going to sit down with you and go through ideas and themes nor is a contractor going to spend time going material and furnishing shopping with you.

On the other hand, your interior designer will get to know you better in terms of your lifestyle to come up with an ID concept that best suits you. Some will even go all the way to help you with decoration and the finishing touches so that a central theme resonates throughout your house. Besides, an interior designer will also help source for the contractor to work on the renovation plans as well as materials needed. They will supervise your project and even help you pick out the right furniture. In other words, you pay them good money to basically do everything before you move in.

Renovating a home may be a pricey affair, so make the most of your budget by working smart!
